Why Choose Serta?
Serta is recognized as the largest mattress brand in the U.S., and the company has been creating innovative products for more than 90 years. Serta products are designed to provide superior comfort, and Serta values its customers by taking a “consumer-centric” approach to design and manufacturing. Today, Serta products are used in over 150 countries, and Serta mattresses are used by many luxury hotel chains around the world.
Serta is an American mattress company that was founded in 1931. Originally, it was called Sleeper, Inc. Since then, it’s grown to be the largest mattress brand in the country. Let’s revisit Serta’s founding and some of its key milestones.
Founding and Milestones
Serta was founded in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. In 1931, 13 different mattress manufacturers came together to license the Serta name. Later on, a cooperative of eight independent licensees owned the company, and it was operated by National Bedding Company for many years. In 2005, National Bedding Company was purchased by private equity firms. Today, National Bedding Company is the largest licensee and the majority shareholder of Serta, Inc. National Bedding Company is owned by Serta Simmons Bedding, which also owns Simmons Bedding Company and Tuft & Needle. Serta Simmons Bedding is based in Atlanta, Georgia.
In 1931, Serta distributed the Perfect Sleeper mattress to the world. The Serta brand name was used for the first time in 1933. In the 1950s, Serta introduced the Sertapedic mattress. The tagline for the Sertapedic mattress was, “You sleep ON it, not in it.” In the 1970s, most people believed that a firmer mattress was always best. Serta defied this idea with the release of the PillowSoft mattress. It was one of the plushest, softest mattresses available at the time. In the 1980s, Serta was the first mattress company to introduce the continuous coil innerspring design.
In 1992, Serta launched its new logo, which is still in use today. Serta’s award-winning “counting sheep” were first seen on commercials in 2000. In 2005, Serta became the first mattress company to make all of its mattresses either meet or exceed the federal flammability standard.
In 2010, the Perfect Sleeper mattress was redesigned with help from the National Sleep Foundation. The redesign was made to solve five of the most common sleep problems, including lack of mattress support, mattress sagging and sleeping too hot. In 2011, Serta introduced its iComfort mattresses. The iComfort system featured advanced cooling technology. In 2012, Serta was ranked as the No. 1 mattress manufacturer in the U.S., and the company won the Women’s Choice Award for America’s most recommended mattress, pillow and box spring brand in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Production and Manufacturing
Serta makes mattresses, bed frames and bedding. Their mattresses include hybrid, innerspring and memory foam options. Many of their mattresses feature cooling technology, and customers can customize the precise cooling level they desire for certain mattresses. In particular, Serta’s iComfort range is highly rated and very popular with buyers. Their Perfect Sleeper mattresses are bestsellers, and they’re used extensively in the hotel industry. For example, Hilton Worldwide and Wyndham Worldwide hotels feature Serta Perfect Sleeper mattresses in their guest rooms.
In terms of bed frames, Serta sells regular (non-adjustable) and adjustable base options. The Serta Motion Air is the brand’s entry-level adjustable base model, and it offers all of the basics of an adjustable base at an affordable price. For customers who want the ultimate level of customization, the Serta Motion Perfect model offers a pre-set “zero gravity” option, and users can program two of their favorite settings. A remote control is included for easy adjustment.
Serta’s bedding options include sheets, pillows, mattress protectors and bundles. All of the bedding is designed to match with the Serta Arctic mattress, but the bedding can be used with other mattresses, too. Serta Arctic bedding allows customers who use other mattress brands to enjoy some of the perks of Serta’s cooling technology. The Serta mattress protector is waterproof, and the pillows come in a choice of fiber or foam. The bundle includes sheets, pillows and a mattress protector at a discounted price.
All Serta mattresses are designed and assembled in the U.S.
Serta has 36 manufacturing facilities in the U.S. In addition, the company has five manufacturing facilities in Canada and one facility in Puerto Rico. At Serta manufacturing locations, finished components are used to assemble the products, and chemical processing is not used at any of the locations.
All of the foam used in Serta products is certified by CertiPur. It’s tested by all of Serta’s suppliers, and it is made without ozone depleters (CFCs), formaldehyde, PBDEs, mercury, lead, heavy metals and prohibited phthalates. To protect indoor air quality, the foam has low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions.
Thanks to Serta’s unique FireBlocker system, Serta products are resistant to open flames. The FireBlocker system is a mixture of synthetic and natural fibers. These fibers are designed to isolate flames and reduce their ability to spread. Serta products meet or exceed federal flammability standards.
Serta is committed to environmental sustainability in its manufacturing processes and in its choice of product materials. To minimize fuel consumption and transportation costs, Serta builds its manufacturing facilities and suppliers close to its customers. All products are made with a “just in time” schedule to reduce waste, warehousing and unnecessary energy use.
The secondary packaging used with Serta products now takes up less than 5% of the product weight. Serta recycles all of the materials for innersprings. If there are any scraps of wood, steel, foam, plastic or mattress ticking that are leftover from the manufacturing process, these scraps are recycled, too.
Serta uses eco-friendly mattress components. The wood used in Serta’s mattress foundations comes from sustainable forests that have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. All Serta innersprings and box springs are crafted with 95% post-industrial recycled steel. The company uses soy-based foams in several of its product lines, and all Serta insulator pads are made of recycled garment clips.
All Serta mattresses come with a 10-year limited warranty. The warranty is valid for the original purchaser, and it covers workmanship and material defects that occur within the coverage period. Warranty coverage begins on the date of purchase.
Some of Serta’s bed frames come with 10-year limited warranties, and 20-year limited warranties are provided with the Motion Essentials and Motion Perfect adjustable bases. Mattress protectors come with a 10-year warranty that covers defects and accidental stains. Serta sheets have a one-year warranty, and Serta pillows include a three-year warranty that covers defects and material deterioration.
If your Serta product fails during the coverage period, Serta will replace it for free. If the product you purchased is discontinued when you make your claim, Serta will give you a replacement that’s comparable in value and quality. To make a claim, you’ll need to provide a copy of the original bill of sale, and you’ll also need to provide the model name label and the law label from your Serta product.
